The Carnival Museum, housed in the modern structure of the Cittadella del Carnevale in Viareggio, is the largest space in Italy dedicated to this cultural and popular tradition. In this place you can find the hangars where the wagons are built and kept, the tanker's workshops, the Museum and a Historical Documentation Center.
Inside hangar n ° 16, the Carnival Museum preserves the historical collection of allegorical constructs divided by thematic areas: satire, science fiction, politics and bureaucracy and space for children.
Every year the exhibition is renewed to host the creations of the Tank Masters. The new pavilion called Espace Gilbert welcomes new masterpieces at the end of each Carnival that expand the collection with wonderful works suspended between fantasy and reality
In the center of the hangar, a gigantic work depicting a dancer welcomes visitors. The papier-mâché work was created by the artists Gilbert Lebigre, Corinne Roger and Arnaldo Galli for the first prize float winner of the 2004 edition of the Viareggio Carnival.
In addition to the exhibition of papier-mâché works, the Carnival Museum is enriched by an important historical archive that preserves precious documents (invitations, regulations, original sketches, magazines) that testify to the long history of the Carnival tradition that from the mid-1800s remains to the present day.
